History
The island of Santa Catarina was formed 20 million years ago and inhabited about 4,500 years ago by the Carijos Indians. The more than 100 rocks marked with strange inscriptions and the 50 sambaquis (shell piles) found around the island are evidence of these inhabitants. Unfortunately, when the European settlers arrived in Santa Catarina in the 16th Century, they caused the demise of the Indian population.
