My trip to Barra da Lagoa
Posted: Tuesday, May 11, 2004 10:32 AM (CST)
Since a lot of my friends have been asking me about my recent trip to Brazil, I thought I would post a message here about my stay in Florianopolis.
In February I was headed to Brazil for the third time in just as many years, and was interested in exploring some new cities. I had heard that Florianopolis was absolutely beautiful and worth checking out.

Since I didn't know much about the area, I did a google search and came across iFloripa.com website. I found the website to be very helpful. The lodging sounded very reasonable, so I sent an email requesting a room and soon started communicating with German Porta.

German was indispensable in planning for my trip. Not only did he set me up with accommodations in Barra da Lagoa, he was also incredibly helpful in confirming reservations I had made in the other cities I planned to visit. German suggested I book one of Sr. Anoldo's apartments in Barra da Lagoa. Since I was a female traveling by myself, it sounded convenient - newly renovated, small kitchen, clean bathroom, right in the heart of town, close to restaurants, internet cafes and the beach. Sr. Anoldo picked me up from the airport and got me settled in on my first evening. The apartment did not disappoint. It was absolutely perfect. I really enjoyed being so close to the water. There were always people on the streets, and a lot of activity in general. During the day, the beach was jam packed with people and in the evening the fishing boats would come in and unload on the docks, and football and volleyball games would take place on the field near the beach.

Every night, as the sun would set, I would walk across the footbridge to the little bar on the canal where they were made the best caipirinhas. Since I was in town leading up to Carnival, late into the night you could hear drummers practicing and whistles blowing. One night, around 2am, there was a group parading down the block where the apartment is located. People were hanging out of their windows listening while others were in the street dancing. It was so festive and spontaneous.

I spent five days in Floripa as I had made plans to head up to Salvador for Carnival. I wish I could have stayed longer. One of the best parts of the trip was meeting a local couple, Paulo and Alicia. They are friends of German and they were kind enough to take me around the beautiful island of Santa Catarina and show me the many gorgeous beaches. One day we hit Praia Joaquina, Morro das Pedras, Armacao, Matadeiro, Pantano do Sul and Igleses. In Pantono do Sul we stopped for lunch where we enjoyed a whole fried fish, marinated vegetables, bolinhos, and plenty of cachaca and beer.

I found it fairly easy to get around Floripa, as the bus system does a great job of covering the island and getting folks onto the mainland. Also, the bus stop in Barra da Lagoa was a stone’s throw away from the apartment.

I checked out the marketplace in the historical center of town (be sure to have already exchanged your currency, as it doesn’t make economical sense to change dollars for reais with the hustlers on the street).

I was able to hit some of the other beaches around the island. Praia Mole was one of my favorites. I just planted myself at a table by a barraca, ate shrimp and drank cold beer all day. On the website’s suggestion, I decided to take a boat trip to Campeche. The island itself is a natural wonder and I really enjoyed the friendly crew on our boat. We had a bit of trouble upon our return to Barra (we got stuck in low water trying to get back to the dock). It was quite an adventure, but well worth the trip.

One of the most memorable evenings I had was at Paulo and Alicia’s house. They live up on top of a very steep hill overlooking the ocean. They were the friendliest of hosts, and prepared a great dinner of grilled anchove and side dishes. Paulo also makes a mean caipirinha. We spent the evening eating, drinking, talking, and listening to great music. They are hoping to convert their home into a pousada, and I wish them well. They really know how to show a guest a great time, and I recommend looking them up if you are ever in Barra.

My short time sadly came to an end, but if history is any guide, I will be back in Brazil next year. I will be sure to spend more time in Floripa, and specifically in Barra da Lagoa. All the talk about Santa Catarina being a magical island is TRUE. I can’t wait to return. And I will definitely be sure to plan my trip again through this wonderful, resourceful website. Thanks again, German!

Dear Naheed,

What rate were you given for the apartment you stayed in? It sounds like you had a wonderful time, perfect for my friend and I who are looking for a relaxing, yet vibrant area to stay for a month or so and concentrate on our surfing!! We are also going through German P to help us find a place but if you think that your place is suitable for two guys, two singles is all we need, please let me know!!

My apologies for being out of the loop in august. I hope you were able to find lodging that met the needs of you and your friend. For future reference, I believe I paid around US$30/day while I was in Barra. It was a one BR with one full bed, so it was more suitable for a couple rather than two guys. How was your trip?

Best,

My trip to Barra da Lagoa

I will go ahead and add my February Floripa trip to this thread because the story is quite similar. To sum it up, I had the best vacation of my life on the island. It was my first trip to Brazil and Florianopolis and I flat-out picked a winner destination.

I started out with my first week at a oceanfront rental home in the southern island fishing community of Pantano do Sul. Wonderful people. Great little town. I came with a yearning for fresh seafood and I became a daily fixture at the beachfront restaurant called Bar do Arante. Outstanding food. My favorite beer on the trip was Bavaria (grande/large) which they serve in a bottle with an insulated plastic holder to keep it cold. The lunchtime all-you-can-eat seafood buffet was rarely missed. Pantano do Sul was low key and very relaxing. Fisherman getting in their small, colorful wooden boats for daytime fishing or night fishing with lights for Lula (squid). Laughing and smiling kids picking flowers or swimming. I wanted this small town environment to begin my stressed-out American comes to Brazil trip. It worked out perfect. As a bonus, I was there for the last two nights of Carnaval and even in that little town it was quite the show with music and dancing on the beach until about 5 am.

Driving the roads of Floripa took some adjustment. It was trial by fire at first. The roads were crowded with cars, darting motorcycles, kids, and a few dogs during the later part of Carnaval. To be honest, I was clueless as far as many of the road signs. What I thought were stop signs (evidently) were not because I had some tooting horns directed at me. The best solution I found was to let someone pass and then do as they do until you get your "sea legs". I adjusted quickly from the airport car rental place to Pantano do Sul.

The next 5 days of the trip was in Barra da Lagoa. This town is larger than Pantano do Sul but still wins a "10" for the charm factor. The place is a gem and the location was ideal along a beautiful waterway separating a large inland lagoon and the ocean. More tourists to add some flavor and an excellent swimming beach and swaying walking bridge to highlight the town focal point that acted as a hub for both fishing and tour boats as well as bus coaches dropping people off.

Some very good restaurants line both the beach and the main street near the walking bridge. I had the best shrimp dinner of my life at restaurant that was located just across from the small Police (Policia) booth. Handy money exchange (Cambio) and Mercados (markets) are all nearby.

As far as the tourists go, I would say that most I saw were Brazilian, Argentine or from Uruguay. There were groups of college-age Israeli students as well. Throw in a sprinkling from the UK and Europe and a very minor presence from America or Canada. Bottom line, this place has not been discovered by North Americans at all. They are missing out on what looks to me like a 1960's version of the California coast.

Floripa had plenty of hitchhikers mainly near the eastside surfing beaches. They were primarily younger women who often times had their surfboards with them. This place is unique and I have not seen anything quite like it before. Like I said, think 1960's and carefree.

My accomodations in Barra da Lagoa were left open until Carnaval had ended as I didn't want to bother with trying to set things up from the USA without seeing the place. I had e-mailed German Porta at this site and he mentioned that his friends Paulao and Alicia had a large room available at a hillside home above the town with an excellent view. I met Paulao at the walking bridge and he escorted me up the path through the nice no-car (southern) portion of Barra da Lagoa. I enjoyed my stay at Paulao and Alicia's very much. Great people. Nice music. And a live and let live attitude that so characterizes this special island. Both Paulao and Alicia speak english fairly well and it was nice to have something resembling a conversation instead of just using my hit or miss limited Portugese vocabulary.

Paulao is keenly involved in the fishing/ boat touring activity in town (exactly what I wanted to do) and he helped set me up where I spent much of my time on the boats enjoying small, sleepy villages/restaurants on the shore of the lagoon and also a trip to beautiful Campeche Island in the ocean south of Barra da Lagoa.

I came to Floripa in search of a place to relax and reflect. It was perfect for just that. The few of us who stumble onto this special location in a very big travel world share a seeking nature. What you seek is here.
